What is the Facebook Metaverse?
We’re not going to explain what the Metaverse is, we’ve already done so in a previous article which we highly recommend 🔥 you check out.
Instead, we’re going to explain what the Facebook Metaverse is, how it works, what you can do in it and how to access it. The Facebook Metaverse is Facebook’s initiative to create an immersive, interactive virtual universe that allows users to explore, socialize and interact in shared digital environments (like Second Life). Facebook is investing considerable resources in the research, development, and acquisition of technologies related to the Metaverse.
This vision 👀 is proposed by Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of the Facebook social network, for the future of online interaction. He describes the Metaverse as an immersive, real-time digital space where users can connect, interact and share virtual experiences.
The idea is to create a virtual and augmented reality environment where users can:
- ➡️ Socialize.
- ➡️ Work.
- ➡️ Shop.
- ➡️ Attend live Facebook events.
And much more. All in a persistent digital universe.
Facebook Metaverse: How do I get in?
Rest assured, you won’t need a specific 📩 invitation to access the Facebook Metaverse. You will, however, need :
- A virtual reality headset (VR headset – VR for Virtual Reality) (here, the Oculus that was bought by Meta).
- An Internet connection.
- The application or a web browser to enter this virtual world.
You can then create your avatar and communicate using it. But don’t worry, we’ll go into more detail shortly.
Incidentally, we’d like to add that this Metaverse has a little name: Horizon Worlds.
Access to Horizon Worlds
Now we’ll take you through the steps you need to take to connect to the game.
- Start by downloading the game 🎮 either on your PC or on your mobile.
- Plug in your virtual reality headset.
- Then go to the Oculus application.
- Enter your Facebook details to log in.
- Follow the instructions given by your device 📱.
- Create your avatar.
Now all you have to do is start your virtual adventure. You’ll be able to enjoy an immersive experience. What’s more, you’ll be able to move fluidly and naturally inside this virtual world using your body’s movements. You’ll be able to :
- Explore the universe.
- Control your avatar.
- Speak 👄.
- Manipulate objects.
- Open doors…
This virtual world is constantly evolving, with new features and experiences being added regularly. This means there are always new discoveries to be made, and you can immerse yourself in an environment that’s constantly changing.
What are Horizon Worlds’ objectives?
So, we’ve explained the Facebook Metaverse, but what about Horizon Worlds? What can you do there? What’s the objective? Don’t worry, we’ll answer all your questions.
We’ve told you that the Metaverse can be explored with a virtual reality headset like Oculus Rift. This technology uses full 3D motion via the motion capture system, in addition to the two handheld motion controllers needed to interact with the game world and objects.
Creating an immersive experience
We’re repeating ourselves throughout this article, but this is the heart 💓 of the platform. It therefore aims to offer a virtual reality where users can feel totally immersed in interactive virtual worlds. The aim is to create a compelling and captivating environment that allows users to enjoy unique virtual experiences.
Players can explore the environment around them within the confines of their physical floor space. To move further afield, they can use the controller’s buttons to teleport short distances or move continuously through virtual space. The central area of the Metaverse, also known as the “plaza”, features portals leading to user-created worlds. These worlds are generated by players themselves using an integrated game creation system 🤯.
The main objective of Horizon Worlds is to create an interactive and social online space where users can explore, create and interact in a virtual reality environment.
Horizon Worlds aims to offer an immersive platform where users can connect with others, discover new worlds and participate in fun and creative activities 🖌️.
Promoting socialization and connectivity
Horizon Worlds aims to be a social platform where users can interact with each other. The aim is to enable users to meet, chat 👄, play and collaborate with friends and others from all over the world by creating connections and forming virtual communities.
Encouraging creativity and collaboration
The platform offers intuitive, user-friendly ⚒️ creation tools that let you build and customize your own virtual worlds. The aim is to encourage creativity by enabling users to bring your ideas to life and share your creations with the community.
Promoting accessibility and inclusion
Horizon Worlds aims to be an open and accessible platform for all. The aim is to reduce barriers to entry and enable a wide range of people, regardless of their virtual reality experience, to participate in and enjoy the Metaverse experience.
Ensuring safety and moderation
The platform places great importance on security and content moderation. The aim is to maintain a safe and respectful environment where users can interact without being exposed to inappropriate ❌ or harmful behavior.
What about Facebook Workrooms?
We’re still sticking with Metaverse, since Facebook Workrooms is a virtual reality (VR) application developed by Facebook that aims to facilitate remote meetings and collaboration by creating an immersive virtual environment.
The app lets you connect with colleagues, customers 💰 and partners from all over the world in a shared virtual space, offering a more immersive and interactive work experience.
One of Workrooms’ key features is the ability to participate in virtual meetings using personalized avatars. Users can choose their virtual appearance. Whether it’s a realistic representation or a fanciful avatar, and interact with other participants in the virtual environment.
Meetings can be organized as virtual round tables where participants can see and hear 👂 other members, while using gesture commands to communicate and interact with virtual objects.
The platform also offers screen-sharing and real-time collaboration features. Users can also collaborate on documents and use virtual tools such as interactive whiteboards to facilitate discussion and note-taking during meetings.
The application is compatible with Oculus virtual reality headsets, such as the Oculus Quest 2, which offer a wireless, stand-alone VR experience. However, users can also join Workrooms meetings using their desktop computer and the non-VR version of the app.
In terms of security, Facebook Workrooms uses privacy and access control features to protect user data and interactions.
Participants must be invited to join a meeting, and privacy controls allow users to manage their sharing settings and control who can see 👀 and hear them in the virtual environment.

By now you’re familiar with the Facebook Metaverse and the fact that it enables 🏼🏼 socialization and collaboration within the Metaverse. It aims to offer users an engaging virtual experience where they can meet new people, interact with friends, take part in video game, interactive experiences and even build their own environments and content.
